Piedade Mountain
The cultural landscape of the mountain range is shaped by the attributed religious symbolism, which arose from the legend of an apparition of the Virgin Mary with Jesus in her arms at the top of the mountain. The chapel built in honor of Our Lady of Piety is located at the top of the mountain; its construction began in 1767 and was only completed in 1778. The architectural complex comprises the Church of Our Lady of Piety, the Pilgrims' House, the Cross with an image of the Calvary scene, a building used as a snack bar, another as a restaurant, and the Church-Shelter of Serra da Piedade (designed by architect Alcides Rocha Miranda), among other buildings.
